Actos and its side effects
49Actos - an effective but problem-laden drug
Actos is one of the premier diabetes drugs on the market right now, with millions of type 2 diabetics using it in conjunction with insulin, metformin, or sulfonylurea programs. Actos has the effect of increasing the body's senstivity to insulin, causing blood sugar to drop. Recently, it's also seen some use as an experimental treatment for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or fatty liver, and it has some success in cases prone to insulin resistance.
There are some potential pitfalls with the drug, as one of my professors who has researched the drug is always wont to detail. People taking it, as is common with many antidiabetic medications, often experience blurred vision, fatigue, swelling, dark urine or anxiety. In addition to the usual battery of complications, though, there has been some data suggesting that women using Actos are more subject to bone fractures, particularly in the upper arms, than those not using the drug.
Actos side effects are relatively tame compared to most anti-diabetic drugs, however, and the drug is a useful and safe way to treat the disorder. I do wish, however, that there was a way to resolve diabetes that didn't put people at as much risk, but maybe medical science will figure it out one of these years.

This is serious stuff, now bladder cancer. France conducted a 3-year study of the drug and, as a result of its findings on Actos’ side effects, the country banned the drug on June 10, 2011. Germany followed suit after looking over the French data and also banned Actos. The FDA said it is reviewing the results of the French research.
